Fuselage mount

A template is made using card to mark out where the four bolt holes need to be positioned in the fuselage. A reference is made relative to the main shaft so that the mechanics will be positioned centrally. The larger cut outs made in the template will allow for orientation in subsequent steps.

The mechanics are then placed in the fuselage so that the main shaft is in a satisfactory position. Using the larger holes in the template it is now possible to see through the pre cut cooling holes in the fuselage to establish where the template belongs.

Once the correct location for the template has been checked it is then just a matter of drilling the four bolt holes.

So that the mechanics have a flat surface to be mounted upon a thin strip of balsa is cut to shape using the temple used above. Prior to applying 24-hour epoxy the cooling holes are masked off to ensure that only the wood is cemented to the fuselage!

To cater for the weave inside the fuselage a few layers of the balsa are routed out, the strength will come from the adhesive.

The mechanics can now be installed on a flat surface and the top fuselage mounts can be added. A strip of balsa was also glued in place behind the glass cloth to spread the load. Round button head bolts are used so that they will not foul the linkages that support the swashplate.
