Hirobo Bell UH-1B

Main frame & transmission

Here is the first complaint. The clutch bell on the right was included in the kit, it is an old design and not even used in the current entry level Shuttle kit. Originally this design was used on Shuttles when they were introduced in the mid 80’s and were prone to failure at the point where the gear had been spot welded into the clutch bell.

Although standard in the Schweizer 300 kit at half the price, a machined clutch bell was ordered and this can be seen on the left. It is important not to confuse this part number with that of other Shuttles with belt driven tails!

The correct Hirobo part number is 0402-326 (S-30 SE clutch bell)

However, when this item arrived Hirobo had not finished it off properly. A radial bearing with an inside diameter of 6mm supports the top of the clutch bell but on this example it had not been turned down and still had a diameter of 8mm.

Luckily a lathe was available and the top of the clutch bell was turned down until the radial bearing had a snug fit. The rest of the assembly was completed as per the instructions.

With the completed clutch bell, main gear, tail drive, and fuel tank assemblies the two side frames can be brought together.

The engine assembly can then be lifted up into the chassis.

The tail drive support and exhaust are added next to complete the main frame and transmission.
